Having parted company with his wife of four years, Chuck McAllister decides to clear his head by wandering solo across Papua New Guinea—a rainforest island where tribal loyalty still reigns supreme—where travel is achieved on foot, by canoe, or hitching a lift with a missionary pilot. Here, many of the people still live as subsistence hunter-farmers, building houses of bamboo and thatch, and getting by without running water, electricity, medicine, or roads. Clan wars are common and celebrations are enacted with drums, dancing, and feathered headdresses. Living in their grass houses and sleeping alongside their pigs, McAllister survives narrow escapes from jungle disease and freezing mountaintops, and makes acquaintances of every description, from Western missionaries to the grandchildren of headhunters. His story is offered in a breezy anecdotal style, enlivened with comic adventures, bits of history, tribal mythology, and personal revelations, and touches upon all those areas central to the human experience—love, sex, religion, war and peace, wealth and poverty, life and death, joy and sorrow. Through it all McAllister learns to live in the moment, look to the future, and let go of the past.

Paradise Solo across New Guinea eBook Chuck McAllister Reviews
I recently read Mr. McAllister's account of his travels through New Guinea. The book was informative and entertaining. I found myself looking forward to each new chapter and wondered what could possibly happen next. I also felt immersed in a culture that was quite fascinating. This is a great travel book and highly recommended.
Chuck McAllister's tale of traveling through Papua New Guinea (PNG), is captivating on so many levels. As a teacher he informs, not pedantically, about a multitude of cultures, most of whom have seen few "Waitman". He is non-judgmental about the different cultures he experiences, yet humorously illustrates that even in remote parts of the world, people are still people, with all the attendant baggage (ignore the war-paint, feathers or tusks through the nostrils). You can get a taste of the lush tropical rain forests, and the high mountains, with their beauty and their dangers.
It was a very enjoyable read. Will I ever go there? Maybe. But Chuck has given me a taste of a land that few of us will ever see, and a land that regrettably is modernizing, and whose arcane spirit may well vanish like a dragonfly in the mist.
